Safety guidelines for shooting steel targets:
Target safety
Before use, inspect the target for damage, stability, and functionality. Place the target on a soft surface that’s free of large rocks or other hazards that could cause ricochets. Avoid shooting at steel that’s pitted, cratered, or otherwise damaged. Targets should never be hard mounted unless angled downward at 20-30 degrees.
Eye and hearing protection
Wear shatter-resistant, wrap-around eye protection and hearing protection.
Gun safety
Keep your gun unloaded until you’re ready to use it, and keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire. Always point your gun in a safe direction.
Ammunition
Use the correct ammunition for the gun and the target. FMJ (full metal jacket) bullets are generally best, and softer bullets are better. Avoid using armor-piercing rounds and steel rounds, which are more likely to ricochet.
Distance
Maintain a minimum distance of 10 yards from the target, and 100 yards with rifles. Standing further away can significantly reduce the risk of being hit by a ricochet.
Other safety
Watch for ricochets, and don’t shoot steel targets with BBs, pellets, or airsoft at thicker targets. If you’re getting pieces of shrapnel sent back up range, it could be a sign of an issue with the range setup or equipment.
